THE MURAL UNFOLDS IN FOUR PARTS, FROM LEFT TO RIGHT BEGINNING WITH AN AUTUMN SCENE AND PROGRESSING TO WINTER, SPRING AND SUMMER.
WITH EACH PANEL, OUR CONNECTION TO THE EARTH, THE ENVIRONMENT, AND STEWARDSHIP OF THE NATURAL WORLD IS STRESSED. PHYSICAL FITNESS, PLAYING OUTSIDE, EXPLORING THE WORLD AROUND US ARE UNDERLYING THEMES. SINCE WE DO NOT EXIST IN A BUBBLE OUR CONNECTION TO OTHERS, TOLERANCE OF THOSE DIFFERENT FROM OURSELVES IS OUR LINK TO THE WORLD WE LIVE IN. INQUIRY, CURIOSITY AND A SENSE OF WONDER ARE FUNDAMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS EXPRESSED VISUALLY THROUGHOUT THIS PAINTING, AS ARE FLIGHTS OF FANCY, DREAMING BIG AND REALIZING DREAMS THROUGH LEARNING.

THE FIRST SYMBOL THAT COMES TO MY MIND WHEN THINKING OF ASHLAND IS GATEWAY. THE ESSENCE OF SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY’S LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY IS A GATEWAY TO RESPONSIBLE CITIZENSHIP IN THE WORLD COMMUNITY. I WANT THIS PROJECT TO REFLECT, VISUALLY, OUR CONNECTEDNESS INTO THE WHOLE WORLD.
AFTER VISITING THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS AND MEETING WITH FACULTY AND STUDENTS I REALIZED HOW RICH IN DIVERSITY THE UNIVERSITY IS. THROUGH THESE PAINTINGS I SEEK TO MIRROR OUR CONNECTION TO THE WHOLE WORLD BY PROVIDING A VISUAL GATEWAY INTO OTHER CULTURES UNDERLINING HOW WE ARE CONNECTED THOUGH MUTUAL HUMAN NEED AND DESIRE.
THE STEVENSON UNION IS A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE COME TOGETHER FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS. IT IS A CENTER FOR STUDENT LIFE AND ACTIVITIES AND OFFERS NOURISHMENT, FOOD FOR THE MIND AND SPIRIT. AS I THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT REPLENISHES OUR BODIES AND SPIRITS, COUPLED WITH KEYWORDS FOR THIS PROJECT AND THE MISSION STATEMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY THE PAINTINGS CAME ALIVE.

I SPENT ONE YEAR IN RESIDENCE WITH PORTLAND FIRE AND RESCUE THROUGH THE REGIONAL ARTS AND CULTURAL COUNCIL INTERSECTIONS PROGRAM, WHICH BRINGS DIVERSE PROFESSIONS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY TOGETHER TO FOSTER UNDERSTANDING AND TOLERANCE. I PRODUCED ARTWORK FOR 6 FIRE STATIONS BASED ON MY RIDE-ALONG EXPERIENCE ENCOMPASSING HUNDREDS OF HOURS IN THE COMPANY OF FIRE FIGHTERS. THE WORK REFLECTED THE HISTORY OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT; THE DIVERSE RESPONSIBILITIES INCURRED BY THE 911 CALLS AND THE FLAVOR OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE THE FIRE STATION IS LOCATED AND THE RICH CHARACTER OF THE FIRE FIGHTERS
